The first first chapter of the The Jesus Storybook Bible is a bit unique. It’s actually just an introduction, but it lays a foundation that many casual readers of the Bible may miss, especially children.
The author, Sally Lloyd-Jones explains “the Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. It’s about God and what he has done.” She explains that the Bible is an epic adventure story and love story all rolled into one. And the most incredible facet of this story is, it’s a true!
The theme of this children’s Bible is “Every Story Whispers His Name.” The introduction explains that Jesus is the key to the Bible and he’s the missing piece of the puzzle that makes all the stories fit together.
Hence, our activity…
I gathered together 11 images of Bible stories (don’t worry, I paid for them and can share them with you in the links below!) and printed them out. Then I arranged them in the shape of a cross.
First, I taped the sheets together so that I could make piece of puzzles that overlapped images. I just used some scissors and cut some random pieces.
I left the images plain so that you can make the puzzle as easy or as hard as your kids would like. This center section was a little too difficult for my barely 4 year old. But the rest of the puzzle was just about right.
It took about 10 minutes to put together and during the activity, Loopy and I had an awesome time talking about each of the stories he knows so well and how they remind us of what Jesus did. He made so many connections that I don’t think he knew before. It was a super helpful exercise that we will definitely repeat!
Here’s the puzzle before I cut it up, in case you want to lay out the images in the same order, but that’s not really important.

Hello,
First, let me say that I love the activities you’ve done to go with the Jesus Storybook! I printed the puzzle for the Jesus Storybook Intro and each picture printed as a full 8-1/2 x 11 page. Is it supposed to be this big? Your pictures do not appear to be such a large puzzle. Is there a way to make the pieces print smaller?
Thank you.
Julie says
So glad you’re using the activities! Yeah, actually, it is that big. Sorry, I don’t know of a way to resize it. I’m not very techy. :/ The size worked well with my 4 year old though.
