Very interesting! Thanks for sharing! How does he handle non-active proprioception? Like weighted blankets and such? Is it possible that he's a seeker in one sense and an avoid in another and the conflict is causing the franticness? Is he seeing an OT? I'd LOVE for you to come back here and tell me what they told you! Glad you're finding something that works!

I feel like I am running into something different with my SPD kiddo. Indulging the sensory seeking with appropriate similar activities backfires and feeds a vicious cycle here. I bought Angie Voss's book about sensory behaviors and EVERYTHING says to do just this... provide appropriate ways for your child to get what they are seeking... but what happens for us, is that it triggers an almost drug-like addiction and desperation and exacerbates the problem 15 fold, every time. For instance, he loves spinning objects. Angie's book says, "Let them watch them! Let them have them!" My child CRAVES them, but when he has them, he gets overstimulated and frenetic and obsessive and it creates a cascade of negative outcomes everywhere. This happens with anything. Our situation looks like this- Sensory Seeking>Meeting Seeking with appropriate alternative>Overstimulated>Frenetic, Desperate seeking>Situation exacerbated to uncontrollable limits. When he is overstimulated, he doesn't present like the kid who runs away and covers his ears or has a meltdown. His "meltdown" looks like more intense, desperate, frenetic seeking, and to indulge it is like putting an avoider, who is screaming and sobbing because he's overwhelmed into a more overwhelming situation. It really perplexes me because it's definitely not standard presentation at all. We achieve the best results here by doing the exact opposite. When he seeks, we avoid the lights he craves, and the fans he craves, and the substances he craves, and he regulates beautifully. It's strange.

Yes yes yes! I agree with everything you said. I love clear you explained sensory issues including examples. It can be so frustrating when you don’t understand what’s going on with your child. This post would have saved my sanity 4 years ago. So I am sharing and recommending every parent and teacher read.
