I think my boys favorite home preschool unit to date has been our study of astronauts. In fact, it’s been almost two months, and I can’t seem to get them very interested in our next unit (Thanksgiving) because they’re so obsessed. This solar system craft came about as I was perusing our craft cabinet in need of an educational craft. I tend to keep trash that could be upcycled into something fun for the kids, like egg carton, milk jugs, and this cardboard from a frozen pizza.

Supplies:
Cardboard Pizza Insert
Glue
First I made a large circle of glue in the center. Loopy sprinkled gold glitter on it, then we tapped off the excess. Then I made eight (sorry Pluto) concentric circles. We covered those in silver glitter and funneled the extra back into the glitter bottle.
Next, the boys picked out the best representations of the planets that they could find. Our pom poms didn’t have all the sizes and colors we needed, but we did our best. I was shocked how much Loopy knew about each planet even though we’d only really discussed them in passing as we learned about astronauts.
The boys were really proud of their solar system craft! It helped them visualize all the planets orbiting the sun as well as some of the planets characteristics. Not bad for a free, no-prep craft!
