When my husband and I were looking for a place to settle down, I found out that a state we were interested in didn't allow midwife led births. It honestly was a deal breaker for us. Good for you for standing up for what would be best for YOUR family!

This is the first childbirth story that prioritizes LOCATION as important part of birthing. I lived in a place where licensed and certified midwives were illegal. Having my son at home was not comfortable at the time but conventional hospital birth was out of the question. For me, it was mainly about location and wanting a place to feel safe and loved. I was blasted as being too picky by both conventional medicine and especially, the natural birth community. Everyone is different and the needs of the family need to be honored. Thank you

Agreed, it was probably the only comfortable thing about birth! ;)

I love this post, Julie! I could have written most of it myself. I did not have another child to think about during my first labor (obviously), but we do have two dogs, one of whom was INCREDIBLY stressed out by me being in labor (and I wasn't even being loud at that point!). After seeing how he reacted I know there's no way I could give birth at home with him around. The birth center is truly the best of both worlds: no temptation for an epidural and you still get to go home and sleep in your own bed that night.
