A Cheap DIY Light Table

January 14, 2014 By Julie 9 Comments

This post contains affiliate links that help support my family at no cost to you. Read more about that here.

If you’re like me, you’ve seen some really neat activities online for little ones, using a light table. You hurry over to Amazon to see how you can get your hands on one of these ingenious inventions and EEEKKK! The price is kinda outrageous.

DIY Light Table

Well, I think I’ve found a pretty good compromise. I was inspired by this post at “Caution! Twins at Play”

How to make a decent DIY light table.

1. Get a frosted container.

Unfortunately, the IKEA container she used was discontinued, so I used one from their TROFAST line which you can find here and flipped it upside down.

TROFAST Storage box IKEA Fits in TROFAST frames. Can be stacked when completed with a lid.
2. Buy 2-3 of these battery operated, remote controlled lights.

I found these at Wal-mart for about $14. purchase them on Amazon.  (Don’t forget batteries!)

3. Stick the batteries inside the lights and stick the lights inside the container

Turn those puppies on!

4. Purchase some see-thru goodies to use as manipulatives.

I decided to make my own. Read about our awesome Christmas Tree Light Table Play that cost us a couple pennies!

I put three sets of lights in there to make this sucker really glow. The possibilities are endless and I’ll be sure to post more as we use it. Hope this makes your light table dreams a reality!

I’m really flattered you liked it. Thanks again for giving me the idea! I never thought we’d be able to have a light table at our disposal. I saw that one of your sons has social anxiety. I recently found out that my three year old has sensory processing disorder and it sounds like they share some similar symptoms and remedies. I will certainly be following your journey as well! Thanks!

I have a question and it may sound stupid so I apologize in advance. Did you put the lights on the lid since the box is played on upside down?

Naw, that’s a good question. I actually just put them on the table or ground and put the bottom (flipped upside-down) over them. Does that help?
