Activity for the Jesus Storybook Bible: God’s Incredible Promise to Abraham

February 20, 2015 By Julie 4 Comments

We are absolutely loving our series of Bible activities that coincide with each chapter of the Jesus Storybook Bible.  Today, our activity covers God’s “impossible” promise to Abraham. We made a fantastic object lesson/art project to illustrate just how lavishly God was going to bless Abraham.

Materials:

Black Poster Board

Glow in the Dark Stars

Regular Glitter (of COURSE Martha Stewart would have glow in the dark glitter. lol!)

Multi-Purpose Glue

Glue Stick

Instructions:

Read the story of Abraham to your child. Ask them how many children Abraham had at the time. (Zero and he was crazy old.) Ask them what God promised to do through Abraham’s family (send a Rescuer for the whole world). God promised Abraham that he’d have more descendants than all the stars in the sky. My son is still at the age where numbers are practically meaningless. 10 is HUGE and 100 floors him. So I really wanted him to be able to visualize just how grand of a promise this was.

I had Loopy use all-purpose glue to secure the glow in the dark stars and planets to our black poster board.

At this point, Loopy was highly impressed by the number of stars in the “sky”. But I wanted to blow his mind!

Using a glue stick, I stickafied the rest of the poster board. Then I let Loopy have at the glitter.

It.  was.  awesome.

Might I suggest putting a tablecloth down so clean up isn’t quite so nutty!?!

Then I asked Loopy to count the stars with me. He gave up super quick, but the object lesson seemed to expand his view of how great God’s promise to Abraham really was.

Here’s a close up of the “universe”.

What a great idea-simple but profound. I wish I could be that brave with glitter! We might try salt instead! 🙂
