Ocean Themed Play Dough

August 7, 2015 By Julie 1 Comment

Oceans fascinate young and old alike.

This month in home preschool, we’ve launched into our ocean unit. We’re ALL super excited!

When I was feeling stressed while preparing dinner one night, I decided to make some super quick play dough to occupy the kids. It quite easily turned into an ocean themed play time!

Ocean Theme Play Dough

Play Dough Ingredients:

Conditioner (Roughly 1/2 a Bottle, I got ours at the Dollar Store to save “dough”. Hee hee! )

Corn Starch (One Small Box)

Food Coloring (Blue and Green)

Directions:

Mix the cornstarch and the conditioner together in a ziplock bag. Start with more cornstarch and slowly add the conditioner. It will seem quite crumbly, till all of a sudden it starts to stay together. Go slow and experiment till you get your desired consistency. Add some blue food coloring and a bit of green to make this lovely aqua color.

To make it more ocean themed for our unit, I got out some sea shells and let the boys add those to the fun. They used them to make imprints in the dough.

Or to play a game of hide-and-seek.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed our play time and I ALMOST got dinner done.

PS Clean-up was a bit messy since the conditioner left creamy streaks on the table. Next time I might lay down a plastic table cloth or have them play inside a bin or tub.

[…] Ocean themed play dough – I didn’t love the texture of this dough (we did find we could periodically add more conditioner to the dough to make it last longer), but it was fun to try something other than the stereotypical stovetop play dough, and it smelled amazing. […]
