Summer Sensory Play: Watermelon Sensory Bag

May 13, 2015 By Julie 3 Comments

Summer is just around the corner and that means, WATERMELON!

Around here, we always try and give activities a sensory twist. This one turned out super delightful!

Watermelon Sensory Bag Summer Sensory Play

This summer sensory play activity came about by accident but ended up being a ton of fun. Setup is simple. And the beans look just like watermelon seeds. It’s hard to do this activity without getting hungry!

Supplies:

Red/Pink body wash (I found some at the dollar store)

Black beans

A ziplock bag

Clear packaging tape

Instructions:

Squirt some red body wash into the ziplock bag. You’ll get different effects with different amounts. A little bit, and the bag will stick to itself. A bunch and it will all sink to the bottom. Either way was still fun to play with. Then add quite a number of black beans to the bag. Seal and then tape to a window.

Here’s one bag that had very little body wash.

And this bag had about double that amount.

No directions are really needed. Kids love to scoot the beans around, squish the bag and look at all the amazing translucent colors. You could even draw a maze on the outside of the bag and challenge older kids to navigate a bean through it.

This month we’re studying plants, so check back for more fun plant based activities and book lists!
