This post is in honor of my dad’s birthday this week. I don’t think anyone would believe he’s old enough to retire. Beside his rugged good looks, I believe one of the reasons he’s maintained his youth is through his almost religious use of vitamins and supplements. As I kid, I remember being impressed by his plethora of bottles strewn across the kitchen table every morning. While I don’t take nearly as many supplements as my dad, there are three that I’ve come to have as staples in my routine. I picked these three because I’ve actually seen results in my life.
My first supplement is Magnesium. I recently wrote about how this has dramatically improved my migraine headaches. Seriously, if you get them, you NEED to try this. Read that post here.
And you can find the brand I use here.
The second supplement I love is Cod Liver Oil. I first became interested in this supplement when I was trying to find a way to strength/health my teeth. A lot of people swear by it. At first I used Fermented Cod Liver Oil with Butter Oil since this seemed to be the industry standard. Unfortunately, I didn’t see a big improvement with my teeth. Sigh. BUT and this is a big “but” my friends, it has significantly helped me with my mood. I have suffered from postpartum depression. You can read my story here. While my second postpartum period hasn’t been nearly as traumatic, I have felt the raging imbalance of hormones. The cod liver oil has helped a lot! It hasn’t made me feel weird or emotionless or any strange side effects. Just more like the real me. (It also helps with the low libedo post birth. TMI? Probably. A tip you’re secretly ecstatic to know? You betcha.) I stopped buying the expensive brand and decided to use the regular Cod Liver Oil
and am still getting the benefits.
The third and final supplement I take is Vitamin D3. As most mothers of little ones, I’m in a constant battle with common cold. I’ve been told over and over how nearly everyone is lacking in this vitamin that is key to a strong immune system. I try to get as much sun for our little family as possible, but we’re still pasty. So I take this Vitamin D3 5000 IUs every day. For my son, he LOVES taking these “Sunny Gummies”
with 1000 IUs of D3. I’m hopeful that the next cold season will see as getting sick a LOT less often. So far so good.
What supplements do you take? Have you seen good results?
Remember, they’re called supplements for a reason. Don’t neglect healthy eating!
