Unit Studies for a two year old: Hits and Misses

October 28, 2013 By Julie 6 Comments

We’ve been doing the super laid back version of preschool with Loopy for the nearly a year now. It’s working pretty well for us. My favorite part is clearing shelves at the library each month on a particular topic. Glare all you want Miss Librarian. I pay my taxes!

Here are the topics we’ve delved into so far.

Dec: Trains (I figured we’d start with his favorite subject ever).
Jan: Oceans and Fish (First couple weeks I thought nothing was sticking. Then I noticed his vocabulary expanding to include things we’d only read about.)
Feb: Musical Instruments (I thought this was going to be way over his head. I was completely blown away by how much he picked up! I’m going to come back and write a whole post on this unit. Lots of fun books and projects.)
March: Weather (Now this one did seem to go over his head. Maybe it’s because the weather is always the same here in Austin!)
April: Babies (He was totally into this. And man, our transition into having a new sibling has been smooth as butter. Maybe all these books helped.)
May: Plants (I got the books. I don’t know if anyone read them to him. First couple weeks with a newborn are always a blur.)
June: Sports (This expanded his vocabulary and showed him how fun sports can be.)
July: Bugs (We did a bunch a craft stuff with this one. He also obsessed over a book about a cockroach. YUCK!)
Aug: Space (I had a harder time finding age appropriate books for this. He loved all the photography of planets and such, but explaining the vastness of space was daunting.)
Sept: Dinosaurs (Tons of books here. I was pretty clueless on this topic, but Loopy set me straight.)
Oct: Pirates (I was nervous about this one being too scary for my sensitive little guy, but the books we’ve found have been super lighthearted and fun. The vocabulary he’s picked up from this one has been especially amusing!)

So that’s a super quick review of what we’ve been up to in the homeschooling world. I plan on going back and doing individual unit post so you can get some more specifics on books and crafts. We’ll just have to see if I took enough pictures and can remember anything from this blur of a year.

Julie is a frazzled mom of three tornadoes. As a dorky second-generation homeschooler, she writes about learning and play, natural living, special needs parenting and matters of the heart. She serves an astounding God that radically saved her.

Sounds like fun! I love that you have chosen topics that he has shown interest in.

It’s been fun finding out what he’s interested in. This month we’re studying bears. I never would have thought of that one! Thanks for commenting!

[…]  I love doing preschool unit studies with my sons. But sometimes I have a hard time coming up with a topic of study that will hold their attention. I decided to do a unit about different careers so I could discover their individual interests. Here’s a list of our favorite children’s books about careers. […]
