“Wintery” Sensory Bin

January 12, 2015 By Julie 5 Comments

Ever have days were you desperately need to keep the kids happy, no matter what the clean up will be like afterwards?

I was having one of those days. My husband was sick in bed, we’d been cooped up inside all week with no end in sight. The boys were impatient, I was impatient.

Sensory bins are SO easy to through together. I decided I should make a half-hearted attempt at a winter sensory bin. It actually turned out decent and the boys were enthralled for a good hour!

Supplies

A Container (You know, something like this.)

White Rice

Shredded Coconut (Optional, but it added to the texture and smelled lovely!)

“Wintery” Pom Poms (You can adapt this for babies that are still mouthing by eliminating these.)

“Scoopers” and “Collectors” (Just raid your kitchen.)

Pour the rice, coconut and pom poms into the bin. Let the kids dig in!

Winter Sensory Bin Edit

It was natural for the boys to scoop and pour with all the kitchen gear. Then the play slowly evolved into imaginary cooking and eating. After a while, we went hunting for the buried pom poms.

Loopy enjoyed slowly shaking the rice/coconut concoction into the bin so that it’d look like falling snow. We made quite the mess but it was worth it to stop the bickering and see some happy faces for once!
