Going green can seem like a never ending to-do list. But when I saw how easy it is to make my own deodorant , I was finally empowered to get started on this new natural journey.
It’s SO easy! Baby steps, guys, baby steps!

It’s quite easy and includes some simple ingredients that can be used for a lot of other green products.
Homemade Aluminum Free Deodorant Ingredients:
1/4 c of Baking Soda
1/4 c of Arrowroot Starch Flour (or cornstarch to save money, though some people have some weird reactions to this)
4 Tablespoons of Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil
10 Drops of your favorite Essential Oil. (I typically use orange. I think if I could only smell one smell for the rest of my life, I’d go with a fresh peeled orange. Yum!)
Mix it all together and put it in a jar with a lid.
You’ll have to use your fingers to apply this. You’ll get used to it, I promise. If it’s solid, rub it between your fingers until it’s pliable. But coconut oil melts at a very low temperature, so if you live in Texas, well, it’s almost always liquid. It will work the same regardless.
Please note that some people have noticed their body “detoxing” with this product. It is NOT an antiperspirant so now that your pits can finally sweat, they will, in abundance. But don’t despair, once your body gets used to its new found freedom, it will start to behave. After the first couple weeks, I really didn’t notice a difference in wetness between store bought antiperspirant and this aluminum-free alternative. And I live in central Texas folks.
P.S. If you’re wondering Why bother? Well, aluminum is being linked to Alzheimer’s. If you’re brave, you can google it. I figured I’d just make this homemade aluminum free deodorant and make my own aluminum-free baking powder and quit worrying.
Two quick fixes. Remember, it takes time and patience to green up your life. Be content during the process!

Does the homemade deoderant stain/ruin clothing?
Julie says
Not normally, but if I let the coconut oil drip down the front of my shirt when applying too hastily, yes. Though I haven’t tried any special tricks to remove the stain.

How does it do on smell? Do you have to reapply throughout the day? I have tried a few aluminum free deodorants and they don’t keep the stink away…
Julie says
For me, it keeps the smell at bay, but not the sweat. My husband sweats so much at his job that he needs to reapply.
