I was curious, but intimidated.

As we got into the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling, I was shocked that even 1st graders were being introduced to the iconic plays of the Bard.

I have been absolutely shocked by how my boys have taken to the plays. I thought everything would go over their head and they would groan every time I pull out the books.

Instead, my oldest is always begging for “one more page!” And one time, my four year old literally stood up and whooped when the good guys won in the end!

But how should you get a little Shakespeare in your life?

I don’t suggest grabbing the full play and reading it act by act. Someday, yes, but here’s how to build up to that.

Children’s Versions

There are many great children’s versions of Shakespeare’s plays. These cover the plot of each play and present it in beautiful, engaging language. These aren’t “translations” into modern English, and they often include some applicable full quotes from the originals.

Two that have been recommended over and over are Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb and Shakespeare Retold by E. Nesbit They still use advanced vocabulary and sentence structure, but your kids (and you) will understand the plot a LOT better!

My new favorite kids version of Shakespeare comes from Usborne. It literally has EVERY play. And before each play is a gorgeous illustration of the main characters and the basic plot. It helps everyone “picture” it and the writing is pretty fantastic too! It’s a must have for your library.

Another go to is any Bruce Coville adaptation. His picture books are so well written that hardly any beauty is lost but a lot of comprehension is gained! And the picture will make it so your kids just can’t help but get sucked into the story!

P.S. If you’re feeling a little daunted by reading so much Shakespeare aloud you could try this: Audiobooks. I can’t believe how many books we enjoyed together in the car or with Audible during quiet times( Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks)! My oldest son can’t get enough of these stories and sometimes listening to them was a welcome break.

Memorize

It’s important for students to understand the plot of Shakespeare, but most of his brilliance is in his actual wording and gorgeous poetic language. I wanted my kids to be exposed to syntax, vocabulary and just the straight up genius of it all. That’s why we use How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare by Shakespeare expert Ken Ludwig. Students will memorize small sections of plays, specifically chosen to highlight plot or technique or just the character of the Bard. Each chapter gives background to the quote and explains all sorts of things that are lost to the casual reader.  I’ve been shocked at how well my young boys can do memorize these tough passage.

Listen to Podcasts

I am a HUGE fan of “The Play’s the Thing” Podcast, put on by an actor and playwright well versed in literature and classical education. The episodes are accessible to total newbies, deep enough to reveal new insights for the scholars, and utterly enjoyable and hilarious! I would suggest previewing them before letting your kids listen. While they’re not risqué, children aren’t the intended audience.

See the Plays!

But of course, Shakespeare wasn’t meant to be just read, but SEEN! So find local groups that are performing his timeless pieces! And in the meantime, search YouTube for performances. We’ve had good luck with recordings of local colleges.

We recently watched this version of 12th Night. It was done in the recreated Globe Theater and with complete historical accuracy. Stephen Fry and Johnny Flynn were in the cast! Had us rolling on the floor!

I’ve been so amazed to see my crazy, rough, messy boys get sucked into the plot of these plays and light up when they hear a line performed that they themselves had memorized. They giggle and gasp and their world of emotions and language continues to grow.

How Ben Franklin Stole the Lightning

Such a fun book! This book pairs nicely with the one about Tesla and a study of electricity.

Another fun story about the genius of Ben Franklin. No problem was too big or too small for Franklin to tackle.

Learn about the courageous man who strove to write a farmer’s almanac with accurate measurements and calculations. He also wrote a stunning rebuke to Thomas Jefferson on his views on slavery that have been preserved for young readers to see. Illustrated by one of the amazing Pinkneys, this book is not to be missed!

Snowflake Bentley

This book is GORGEOUS and won the Caldecott. When art and science come together, it’s awe inspiring! You’ll never look at a snowflake the same way again!

The french naturalist, Jean Henri Fabre sure had the habit of attention down! Amazing how just observing what’s around you can lead to big things!

We enjoyed learning about Dr. Just and his discoveries related to sea creatures! I thought it was noteworthy how many different fields he studied before finding his niche.

On a Beam of Light: A Story of Albert Einstein

Einstein’s mother was told that her son was an idiot. I loved this book for the hope it brought to folks that don’t do well in traditional schools yet excel at thinking beyond the norm.

Fictional Inspiration:

Papa’s Mechanical Fish

One of our all-time favorite picture books EVER! This is a fictional take on a true story about a man who tried to invent a submarine in Chicago’s Lake Michigan. The illustrations are vivid and hilarious! The father is never deterred by failure and his family is full of grace and good ideas! Absolutely LOVE!

Rosie Revere, Engineer

Another fictional story that encourages kids to try crazy things and that failures are just stepping stones to success. I really enjoyed the rhyming text!

Ada Twist, Scientist

We didn’t read this one yet, but it’s by the same creators of Rosie Revere, so I expect good things!

This is a great reference book with over 50 inventors highlighted! Great introduction to whet a child’s appetite to explore the life of more inventors.

Loyalty and bravery aren’t reserved just to the human soldiers. Read how Sallie became an instant comrade and faithful companion for a group of Union soldiers. 

Soldier Song a True Story of the Civil War by Debbie Levy

An interesting perspective on the role music played in the war, giving instructions, preventing boredom, and offering hope. Interspersed with soldiers letters and journal entries. 

Picture Books about Political and Military Leaders During the Civil War

Before Ulysses S. Grant Was President by Mark Harasymiw

This biography on Grant focuses on his time before his presidency, mainly as the top general in the Union Army. 

Cincinnati: U.S. Grant’s Famous Warhorse by Margaret Samdahl

Many great General’s rode into victory on the back of equally heroic steeds. Ulysses S. Grant was no exception, using his trusted “Cincinnati” in the heat of battle. 

Ulysses S. Grant: Expanding & Preserving the Union by Wendy Conklin

This isn’t a storybook as much as a well laid out children’s non-fiction book about the whole of Grant’s life. 

Robert E. Lee, Brave Leader by Rae Bains

I wanted to include biographies about confederate soldiers and leaders, not to celebrate their misguided choices, but to see their humanity and learn from their strengths and shortcomings.  A Picture Book of Robert E. Lee by David A. Adler

This is always a great series, so I was excited to see that Adler tackled the life of Robert E. Lee, a complicated man.

Abraham Lincoln, 75th Anniversary Edition by Ingri d’Aulaire and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire

If you haven’t read a d’Aulaire book before, drop everything and read these nostalgic masterpieces. These books deserve the title of “classic”.

Young Abe Lincoln: The Frontier Days: 1809-1837 by Cheryl Harness

Ms. Harness is quickly becoming one of my favorite non-fiction writers! She has teamed up with National Geographic numerous times and each one that we’ve gotten our hands on has been a hit. This book in particular focuses on Lincoln’s early life. Abe Lincoln Goes to Washington: 1837-1865 by Cheryl Harness

The sequel to the book above focus on Lincoln’s presidency. 

Honey, the Dog Who Saved Abe Lincoln by Shari Swanson

When young Abe rescues of pup, little does he know that that dog will one day save his life. Well researched glimpse into Lincoln’s childhood and the providence of God over his life. Lincoln Tells a Joke: How Laughter Saved the President (and the Country) by Kathleen Krull

So many biographers discuss how Lincoln’s humor was a life line to him during the horrors of the war years and tragedies that befell his family. This book brings that topic to the students’ level while lifting up joy in the midst of sorrow.

What Lincoln Said by Sarah L. Thomson

A picture book on the life of our famous president with plenty of quotes from him interspersed. 

Picture Books about Juneteenth for Kids

All Different Now: Juneteenth, the First Day of Freedom by Angela Johnson 

Lovely illustrations showcase the joy of the first Juneteenth for the formerly enslaved of Texas. Helpful notes in the back fill in more history. 

Juneteenth for Mazie by Floyd Cooper

Excellent explanation of Juneteenth as young kids learn alongside Mazie what this day is all about.

The Juneteenth Story: Celebrating the End of Slavery in the United States by Alliah L. Agostini 

An honest look at the delays and injustices prior to Juneteenth. From the perspective of a modern day family. 

Free at Last: A Juneteenth Poem by Sojourner Kincaid Rolle

Moving poetry. Equally moving art. All kids should be exposed to poetry and all kids should know about Juneteenth. Read it and you won’t be disappointed. 

Opal Lee and What It Means to Be Free: The True Story of the Grandmother of Juneteenth by Alice Faye Duncan

Set in modern times, Opal Lee explains what Juneteenth is all about and her role in establishing it as a holiday.

I’d stay up late at night, immersed in a story. 

I couldn’t eat without a book in hand or at least SOMETHING to read. 

My mom would let me delay doing my other school work if I was really into a novel.

College made reading work, and while I still did plenty of it, a lot of the pleasure was robbed from me. 

When kids came along, it became nearly impossible to pee in peace, nonetheless read a book!

The baby stage was extremely rough on me (read my post partum depression story HERE) 

and I was hanging on to sanity by a thread. I felt like a machine that was being used up and worn out. My intellect was dying a slow death and I felt utterly consumed. 

The idea of adding anything to my to do list, especially something as reading for pleasure, seemed out of the question. 

But about four years ago, I decided that I simply had to make reading a priority.

And I had no idea how much it would impact my life.

Why Moms Should Read

Self Care

Every mom is told that she needs to take time for herself. In fact, we feel guilty that we don’t take care of ourselves. UGH! But I didn’t find most people’s idea of self care to be fulfilling. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy bubble baths and massages like the rest, but within 2 minutes of the relaxation being over, I was utterly stressed yet again. 

But when I started to read seriously, I began to feel alive again. My brain had something to mull over during the monotonous parts of the day. My mind had living ideas to contemplate and discuss with other people. Honestly, I felt human again.  

Growth

I had bought into the lie that I was at my intellectual height in college and that I was forever doomed to “mom brain”. Guys, our prefrontal cortex hasn’t even finished developing by the time most of us get out of college! Don’t sell yourself short. 

At first, I was extremely intimidated by lofty, deep classics. I felt stupid. 

Finally I convinced myself that it’s ok to be completely lost and confused when you read a book, just keep at it. Each book will still have something to teach you, another stone in the foundation. 

One of my favorite podcast is called “Close Reads”. When I first started listening to them discuss a book, I was convinced that I was out of my element. So many things went over my head. But I kept at it, and as my arsenal of books kept accumulating, so did my understanding. References started to click. I started making my own connections. I became confident enough to disagree!

Am I some sort of genius? No. Am I well read? Not yet. But my confidence in my ability to learn has grown tremendously. 

I’m so glad I didn’t let my education end in college. Yikes!

Tips for Finding the Time to Read

Overcoming Road Blocks and Lack of Motivation

Have you ever started a book and somewhere around chapter 5, you just start to drag? Your pace and interest slow and reading suddenly becomes a chore?

Have you ever decided to read a book, but when you actually get a chance to read, you’re not in the mood for that type of book?

My answer to these two issues is to read a variety of books at the same time. It might seem chaotic and counterintuitive, but I always have at least four books going at once. 

I picked four genres of books that I often read and at the beginning of every month, I make a selection for each category.

My four topics are:

1. Practical
2. Fun
3. Classic
4. Spiritual

Some days I’m just in a get stuff done mode and can only stomach non-fiction, practical stuff. Other days I just need to chill with a fun book. When my mind is hungry, I dive into classic and spiritual books. They all get done eventually and the variety keeps me eager for more.

(I resisted this idea for a long time, but when I tried it, I was suddenly reading A LOT more.)

Use Your Time Wisely

If you are picturing me reading books with a quiet house and a warm cup of tea with my feet up in a clean home, you got me all wrong. While I wish my life could look like that, it’s very far from reality. Instead, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I will rarely get a big chunk of time to read. I HAVE TO use the little snippets of down time as much as I can. And they will add up. Believe me. I don’t know how I ever finish books when it seems like I only read a page at a time, but somehow, it still gets done!

(Does your phone keep track of how much time you spend on it? What if you replaced half that time with reading. Imagine the growth and mental health you could achieve!)

Prepare yourself to utilize the time you have by having multiple formats and locations for books. I have one of my four books by my bed, another down stairs, usually in the kitchen so I can read at grab a quick bite to eat. The other I keep in my purse for all those times I’m stuck waiting when away from home.

Then my big secret…

I devour audiobooks. When I’m cleaning or walking the dog or driving, I’ve got a book going.

I strongly recommend using Bluetooth Headphones like these that I use so that it doesn’t have to be quiet for you to be able to hear your book.

Many libraries have apps for renting audiobooks. But those are often limited and you have to wait to get a book. So while I use the library when I can, we use Audible for most of our audiobook needs. As homeschoolers, (especially with a student who has dyslexia) getting an Audible membership has been one of the best investments in their education. They have every obscure book on my kids list of books to read aloud. I know I never would have made it through massive books like “The Count of Monte Cristo”, “David Copperfield”, or “Crime and Punishment” without it being read TO me by fantastic narrators.

Over the summer, we combined history and science by studying the lives of famous scientists and inventors. These picture books about scientists and inventors inspired hours of creativity and dreaming that could very well change the course of my boys lives.

W Is For Webster: Noah Webster and his American Dictionary

As a transition from our study of scientists and inventors, I grabbed this book about the creator of the first American dictionary. We all found it fascinating. His dedication to his task was truly remarkable.

Alabama Spitfire: The Story of Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird

While the actual book “To Kill a Mockingbird” is too mature for my boys right now, I was happy to introduce them to the life of the author, Harper Lee. She was an awful like her protagonist Scout and her tenacity in becoming a writer was admirable!

The Boy on Fairfield Street: How Ted Geisel Grew Up to Become Dr. Seuss

An indepth look at how Ted Geisel’s childhood shaped the author he would become. It was encouraging to see that he wasn’t always understood by others yet didn’t let that stop him. My boys were amazed that anyone would criticize one of their favorite authors! The information at the back of the book was insightful as well! Lots of background into what spurred him to write some of his more famous works.

Bard of Avon: The Story of William Shakespeare

My boys adore Shakespeare and have loved learning about, watching and quoting his plays. Getting to learn about the man behind some of the most enduring stories of all time was so worth it. Diane Stanley has written many great biographies for kids that are FAR from boring!

A Picture Book of Harriet Beecher Stowe

A fascinating book about the life and impact of Harriet Beecher Stowe. I love that this book highlighted the impact that Beecher Stowe’s book had on the anti-slavery movement. Words can change the course of the world!

Lucy Maud Montgomery

A straightforward book about the author of the beloved “Anne of Green Gables” series.  It  becomes quite clear how the Maud Montgomery’s life was the inspiration for Anne’s plot. The illustrations are delightful as well!

Lost Boy: the Story of the Man Who Created Peter Pan

Who can forget Neverland, Peter Pan, Hook, and the rest of the gang? J.M. Barrie certainly created one of the most magical and memorable stories of all time. Yet his life was filled with pain and tragedy. Through befriending another suffering family with young boys, Barrie was able to heal and offer healing, including through his writing!

Pioneer Girl: The Story of Laura Ingalls WilderPioneer Girl: The Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder

A superbly illustrated book that walks through the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family. It’s like a speedy trip through the whole Little House series, but includes her adult life, her journalist daughter, and how Laura became a world famous writer. It was like visiting an old friend, and got my boys excited to chronicle their own lives.

Picture Books about Poets

16 Words: William Carlos Williams and “The Red Wheelbarrow”

A gorgeously illustrated book about William Carlos Williams and his ground breaking poetry. We especially loved how Williams, though a Pulitzer Prize winning poet, was still a full time physician. But his keen observation skills and his willingness to simply put down words on paper, left the world with thought-provoking poems to chew on.

Emily

I automatically love anything illustrated by Barbara Cooney. This book is written from the perspective of a young neighbor girl of Emily Dickenson. The focus is on Dickenson’s reclusive lifestyle but her generosity with words, a gift that continues to delight readers the world over!

The Story of Emma Lazarus: Liberty’s Voice: A Biography of One of the Great Poets in American History

I had never heard of Emma Lazarus, but my goodness, what a role model she was! Ms. Lazarus wrote the poem that is engraved on the Statue of Liberty “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” and she fiercely lived up to her ideals to create an America that stood for freedom. This is a must read!

Papa Is a Poet: A Story About Robert Frost

Written from his daughter’s perspective, this book gives a lovely look at the life of Robert Frost. It magnificently wove direct lines of Frost poetry into the prose of the story. The back of the book gave even further details plus many whole poems to soak in! Super inspiring!

Grass Sandals: The Travels of Basho

This book about the father of Haikus introduced my boys to the 5-7-5 pattern while showcasing Basho’s life. We enjoyed learning about another ancient culture and the illustrations were fascinating and entrancing. Big bonus points for having actual haikus throughout the text!

Poet: The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton

This book had us wanting to stand up and cheer by the end! The determination of George M. Horton to learn to read, write, and produce poetry all while living under the evil of slavery was truly remarkable.

Pablo Neruda: Poet of the People

Featuring the Chilian poet Pablo Neruda, this book shows how a love of words and nature and bring about beautiful poetry. But above words and nature, Neruda loved people. Now that’s something I want my boys to emulate!

Imagine

With beauty and depth, Juan Felipe Herrera tells his life story of becoming the 21st U.S. Poet Laureate and he does the telling with POETRY! Growing up with his migrant farmer parents, Herrera shares his boyhood and imagination that led to greatness. Illustrated by Caldecott winner Lauren Castillo, this book is not to be missed!

Warm drink and a blazing fire with contented children curled up on the couch?

In a beautiful meadow with picnic blankets and quiet kids weaving daisy chains while they listen?

Well, I’ve got bad news for you.

Those perfect moments are just a figment of your imagination.

The reality is, most read aloud times look more like…

Sibling squabbles…

Ringing phones…

Interrupting questions…

Kids constantly moving around (or even wrestling)…

Mom not knowing how to pronounce a word…

Toddler or puppy eating something they shouldn’t…

Getting up 84 times to refill a child’s drink…

You get the picture.

Most people give up on reading aloud to their kids because it’s a hassle and it seems like no one is listening.

But most of us are convinced that reading aloud to our children is an incredibly valuable way to:

1. Increase our kid’s intellect
2. Grow their compassion
3. Solidify our relationships with them

So how do we get from point A (total mayhem) to point B (brain building, heart growing, family bonding)?

Reality Check

First, remind yourself that everyone deals with interruptions during read-aloud time. Those gorgeous images you see on Instagram are silent and still, but those families reading aloud, usually aren’t.

Having to stick a bookmark at your place while you change a diaper doesn’t have to mean that read aloud time is a failure or that it has to even be over for the day.

Start with Picture Books then Add Variety

Start reading to your kids as infants. Seriously! You want them to associate books with happy bonding time with mom or dad.

Kids way older than that? It’s never too late to get your kids to love reading. Even if they’re in upper grade school, lure them in with a fantastic picture book, especially something funny like The Book Without Any Pictures.

There’s something about picture books that are just so inviting, non-threatening, and engaging. And they TOTALLY count for read aloud time if you pick high quality living picture books!

After your kids are hooked on picture books, introduce chapter books with plenty of pictures. E. B. White, Roald Dahl, and Beverly Cleary are just a handful of fantastic book series with lots of fun pictures to ease your kids into the realm of imaging more.

But here’s the thing, don’t drop the picture books! Even when your kids are off reading their own novels, throw your kids the occasional curve ball with a picture book. There are so many great ones out there about history, science, and real humanity!

Have a More than One Book Going at a Time

In our family, we always have multiple books going.

Usually Dad is reading something to the boys at bedtime. I have an official “school” read aloud and one “fun” read aloud. We also always have an audiobook going in the car. (Side note, those audiobooks totally count and I’m SHOCKED how many books we blast through even without going on a long distance trip.) My boys also listen to an audiobook all by themselves during their “quiet hour”. I like that they have a book all to themselves that they narrate back to me when its all done (not each day, just at the very end of the book).

Yup, at least five read alouds at once, not counting all our school reads!

But here’s the thing, we don’t spend equal amounts of time on each one.

One book will start to get extra exciting, and we’ll push the others aside or slow down with them so we can spend more time on the thrilling one.

But once one ends, we’re already into a couple others. That way we can see which book catches on. If we only had one read aloud and it turned out to be a dud, we lose our momentum and usually have a long lull before everyone was excited to read something new.

Having multiple books going at the same time also helps ensure everyone has a something to enjoy in an appropriate age range or genre. 

Just Add Food

I’m a boy mom. I’ve learned that food is a universal motivator and it also keeps hands busy and mouths FULL! It’s amazing how a “fancy looking” snack can elevate the whole experience the whole read aloud experience.

It doesn’t have to be homemade or gourmet. Sliced fruit  and some crackers look like a feast when they’re spread on a pretty plate and you light a candle!

When I’m the only adult and all three boys are up, I don’t even attempt a read aloud without adding food!

Let Them MOVE

This might seem crazy, but kids listen BETTER when they are moving and fidgeting! The brain NEEDS sensory input through touch and movement. You don’t want your child spending all their brain cells trying to hold perfectly still.

Instead, let them color or build Lego or swing outside. You’ll be shocked how much better they comprehend and remember when they’re allowed to fidget and move (within reason, drum solos probably won’t work).

P.S. Also, audiobooks can help kids to get in the habit of listening to books being read aloud. If you’re getting frustrated with interruptions (or are starting to go hoarse) give it a try.  ( Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks) I wouldn’t suggest trading reading aloud yourself for only listening to audiobooks, but it is a useful tool. My kids get into the voice actors who can give each character a unique voice in a way I can’t.

It Adds Up

Folks, I have three boys, 7, 5, and 2 1/2. It’s a unicorn kinda day if we get through a full chapter in one “sitting” (see above). Five to ten minutes is probably our average read aloud session.

Sometimes it seems like we will NEVER finish a book at our tortoise rate. But you know what? Those minutes add up because reading aloud is a habit in our family!

Your kids rocked their math lesson, read some great books, and loved their science experiment.

You’re feeling pretty good about your homeschool day. Then you remember with a stab of guilt, the often overlooked subject of GEOGRAPHY. Groan.

If it sounds dry and monotonous, let me show you some easy ways to make geography come alive for you and your students!

1.Living Books

Remember that history and geography are indelibly linked. If you don’t include geography in your homeschool history, you’re likely to end up with more of a black and white picture of the past, than a vividly colorful one.

So choose fantastic history books (we LOVE Beautiful Feet Books) and you’ll find your students asking geography questions quite naturally!

There are also tons of living, rich fictional books that get kids interested in land and sea formations.

Any book by Holling C Hollings is a slam dunk for living geography books. We loved  Paddle-to-the-Sea (about the great lakes region and St. Lawrence river). Now we’re in the middle of reading Tree in the Trail about the Santa Fe Trail, native Americans and western expansion. There’s also Pagoo (tide pools)  Seabird (world geography) and Minn of the Mississippi (Mississippi river). The illustrations will have you staring for a VERY long time!

Give Your Child the World: Raising Globally Minded Kids One Book at a Time This is a book for you mama! A fantastic book list divided by global regions as well as age groups. I’ve found it very helpful!

We’re slowly reading picture books from around the globe and compiling our favorites for you. So far we’ve traveled to the Middle East and Asia.

2. Puzzles in the Shape of the Countries

After playing with these puzzles, my mom remarked, “I feel like I understand SO much better how everything fits together, literally!” It’s weird, but something about the tactile, kinetic input, makes assembling puzzles one of the best ways to really grasp geography.

The best quality map puzzles out there are the Montessori ones! They have everything, Europe, Africa , USA , Asia North America, Australia, South America, and Canada

But they can be quite expensive (they’re made out of high quality wood!) We found some made out of high quality cardboard, but sadly they’re no longer made. I’ve also had many folks recommend the GeoPuzzles – World Map & Jigsaw Puzzle as a decent middle ground alternative. 

3. Draw It

To really become competent with geography, students need to interact with maps.

One way to do this is with the series of books called Draw the World: An Outline of Continents and Oceans. They also have specific books for different locations, like Draw the USA. With just five minutes of work here and there, students are able to accurately draw the political maps of the world. My boys aren’t quite old enough yet, but a lot of my homeschooling buddies RAVE about this series and we plan to start using it soon.

4. Map Work

I’ve saved my favorite for last. Have you heard of Pin It! Maps? They’re the ultimate in map work!

They have tons of maps that are backed by thick Styrofoam. There are bunches of pin “flags” that students place all over the map, depending on what they’re working on. The are pins for everything you can think of, from state names, state flags, cities and capitols, land formations and national parks, water features and more!

Now, there isn’t just one map for each geographic area, oh no! With the US and US history bundle, there are three LARGE 18″ by 24″ a maps that are marked with things like US History from the 1800s, Early America.

Then there are 11, yes eleven, smaller maps (still substantial at 12″ by 18″) with markings like state flags, native american tribes, battle sites from the Revelation, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The 13 colonies have their own map and so much more.

As you can see, these maps are loaded with details!

These Pin It! Maps will grow with us all the way through high school I’m sure. Since geography touches so much of every day learning, we’ll be busting these out regularly.

Since we’re getting ready to road trip from Austin, TX to Boston, MA, we’re doing map work specific to the trip. I’ve pulled out states and cities we’ll be passing through, as well as national parks and water features we’ll be seeing (hello Niagara Falls!).

2017 was the year we really started diving into chapter books. I’ve been dreaming about this stage in life since before I was married! Sharing fantastic stories and adventures within the pages of a book with my children is even better than I imagined. Here are our highlights from this year. We read a couple more, but they didn’t make the cut.

P.S. Wondering how the heck we read so many books when we still have a special needs toddler and bouncing boys? Mostly audiobooks friends. I can’t believe how many books we enjoyed together in the car or with Audible ( Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks) during quiet times! I only read about 20% of these aloud to them. The rest we listened to. I hope to shift that percentage as my youngest gets older, but you do what you got to do!

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

Ok, this one was my second favorite book this year. I beg you to get this copy of the book, the illustrations fit the beauty of the prose, which is no easy feat! And read it aloud. Language this beautiful isn’t meant to be read silently. It might take a awhile. It’s very rich, but the plot held my older son’s interest and I delighted in each morsel we read.

My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George

The story of a boy who craves connection to the wildness of the forest. Goodness sakes my boys learned so much natural history and survival techniques.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater

So many laughs! My three year old was all about this one and the wild antics of Mr. Poppers pets!

The Bandit of Ashley Downs: Introducing George Müller (Trailblazer Books) by Dave and Neta Jackson

The Trailblazer series is a fantastic way of introducing your kids to famous heroes of the past in a living books sort of way. The plot is fictitious, but not far from the truth, and gives kids a look at this wonderful people from the past, through the eyes of a child.

A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond

Hilarious. Simply hilarious!

The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner

This was the first chapter book I ever read on my own. It’s a bit of a mystery and full of lovely sibling relationships. My boys were literally bouncing as we read it!

The Cricket in Times Square (Chester Cricket and His Friends) by Garth Williams

I randomly picked this one up at the library and it quickly became one of my favorites! A cricket makes beautiful music in the otherwise dreary downtown subway station. The interaction between the animals and the little boy who’s family owns the stand rivals the genius of E.B. White.

The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks

This is the book that got my oldest hooked on chapter books. The plot sucks you in and holds you tight till the end! What could be more magical that mini figurines coming to life???

The Return of the Indian by Lynne Reid Banks

The funny sequel to “The Indian in the Cupboard.”

The Door in the Wall by Marguerite De Angeli

My boys listened to this one on their own and they were totally in to it! I asked them to tell me about it, and I got a good 20 minute narration about the boy destined for knighthood who loses the use of his legs, but still finds a heroic way to serve his king.

Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder

The perfect start to the series. Good for even the youngest crowd.

Little House on the Prairie  by Laura Ingalls Wilder

The classic book about a brave pioneer family and their struggles.

Farmer Boy (Little House) by Laura Ingalls Wilder

When I ask my oldest what his favorite book of the year was, he quickly pointed to this one. The third book in the Little House series takes a break from following the Ingalls family, and instead introduces us to Almanzo Wilder. He’s such a related boy and parents would be hard pressed to find a better role model for their boys! When my boys realized the author shares a last name with him, the mystery kept them anxious for the paths to cross in each following book.

Back to the Ingalls family and back for more adventures in a new homestead claim.

By the Shores of Silver Lake  by Laura Ingalls Wilder

The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder

This one wins as my favorite read aloud of the year. Wow wow wow. Such an incredible story of the sheer will to survive. The heroism, bravery, and hope of these pioneer families brings me to tears every time I think of it.

Little Town on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder

These Happy Golden Years by Laura Ingalls Wilder

We’re actually still finishing this one. But I just had to include the final book in one of the best series ever written.

Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink

A true story of a tomboy and her brothers adventures in the frontier of Wisconsin. Full of danger and excitement. If you like the Little House series (who doesn’t?), this is good choice to follow up with.

The Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White

My new favorite E.B. White story. Louie the trumpeter swan is mute so he learns to play a literal trumpet and crave out a unique life for himself all over the country.

Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White

The classic tale of learning to love and let go. I can’t believe I cried at the end. I knew what was coming. I’d read it before. But goodness, it’s so flawlessly written!

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

A fascinating tale of a china rabbit doll who is living high and mighty as a favorite toy until one day, he is lost. He journeys for years and learn much about people and himself.

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

A strange dog gives a little girl courage to face all the hard things in her life. Sad and poignant.

The Complete Tales of Winnie-The-Pooh by A. A. Milne

So many gems and one-liners in this collection! Pooh and friends should be a staple of every child’s youth.

James Herriot’s Treasury for Children by James Herriot

If you haven’t read anything by James Herriot, you’re missing out! True stories of a country vet in turn of the century England. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll learn so much natural history and biology! Timeless stories that delight all ages.

James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

Over the top hilarious and all sorts of whimsical.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

I’m not sure which my boys liked more, the quiet, obedient, kind underdog winning, or all the candy!

Five Little Peppers and How They Grew by Margaret Sidney

A heartwarming and exciting tale of a poor family with five lovable children.

Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary

Very related antics of a young boy and his dog. My boys laughed aloud the whole time. Easy to read for newer readers too!

The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary

Can’t get much cooler than a mouse with a motorcycle! My middle son LOVED this one!

The Magician’s Nephew by C. S. Lewis

A really fun prequel to the Narnia series! And the creation scene will stick in your mind forever!

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

If you only read one of the Narnia series, this is probably the best, though they’re all so good! Lewis is a genius, there is no doubt.

The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis

Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis

The Voyage of the ‘Dawn Treader’ by C.S. Lewis

Every homeschool semester, I get all giddy as I pick an area of the world that the boys and I will focus our picture book habit on. (It’s an addiction really. I had 96 books checked out from a single library once. And I have four town library cards!)

I wanted to share our top picks from our study on Asia. This books are plot driven, capturing imaginations without kids ever realizing their learning. Perfect way to get accustomed to a new culture.

Note: I focused mostly on oriental cultures. I decide to leave Russia for our study of Europe and most of southern Asia for our Pacific studies. I think India may get it’s own unit!

Tanuki’s Gift: a Japanese Tale by Tim Myers A furry tanuki and a priest become unlikely friends.

The Story about Ping by Marjorie Flack A classic book that every child should have the pleasure of reading! When a duck who lives on the Yangtze River gets separated from his family, chaos ensues.

All the way to Lhasa: a Tale from Tibet by Barbara Berger A sweet tale about a boy and his yak plodding along while a reckless boy races ahead through the mountains. Beautifully illustrated.

Urashima Taro and other Japanese Children’s Favorite Stories by Florence Sakade We’ve really been getting into folk tales around here. I have learned so much about what a culture values by their folktales and this is a fine collection!

The Pet Dragon: a Story about Adventure, Friendship, and Chinese Characters by Christoph Niemann Ok, this one wins top marks for creativity! As you follow the plot of a girl and her misadventures with a dragon, you’ll learn to read a couple words in Chinese as the characters are placed into the illustrations and the strokes fit the context perfectly. Hard to explain but my 3 year old had no trouble remembering over 15 written Chinese words. I was impressed!

Two of Everything: a Chinese Folktale by Lily Toy Hong A hilarious folktale about a pot that doubles whatever happens to go into it. Kids will love it!

Ruby’s Wish by Shirin Yim Bridges A lovely true tale about a young Chinese girl who wanted more than to be spoiled. She wanted to get an education.

The Funny Little Woman by Arlene Mosel More like the clever little woman! A humorous tale that won a Caldecott Medal, so it’s definitely not to be missed!

Bee-bim Bop by Linda Sue Park See what life is like when Korean family prepares dinner. So relatable! 

The Emperor and the Kite by Jane Yolen A fantastic tale of an imprisoned emperor and his brave and often forgotten youngest daughter. The illustrations are so intricate and captivating!

Have you heard of the tradition of wrapping 12 or 24 Christmas books and opening one a day leading up to Christmas? We’re attempting that this year and I AM STOKED!

Whether you plan to go all out or you’re looking to add a couple classic Christmas books to your library, this list is full of classic, gorgeous, and heartfelt living books. These stories will come alive in your child and truly help to shape their character. (Can you tell I’m passionate about reading aloud to my kids?)

The Gift of the Magi O. Henry’s classic tale illustrated with poignant beauty. Grab this book when you want to promote a selfless Christmas attitude.

An Orange for Frankie Anything by Patricia Polacco is worth buying. Her true tales will grip your and your child’s heart and inspire character growth.

The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree: An Appalachian Story It’s illustrated by the Caldecott Queen Barbara Cooney. Good luck finishing this one without crying.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey Many folks all-time favorite Christmas books. A true classic and so so beautiful.

Mary, Did You Know?: The Story of God’s Great Plan The popular hymn gorgeously illustrated and brought to life for a whole new audience.

The Little Drummer Boy Written by the famous Ezra Jack Keats (think The Snowy Day), this book tell the story of a little boy wanting to bless Jesus with what little he has.

Christmas Day in the Morning A lovely tale of a boy who serves his father as a sweet Christmas present.

The Story of Christmas The Biblical Christmas story, illustrated with stunningly bright and intricate pictures.

The Legend of the Candy Cane This book teaches kids the symbolism behind the beloved candy cane. My boys have to try not to drool over the candy store in this book.

The Legend of the Christmas Tree Find out the meaning behind the tradition of the Christmas tree!

Legend of the Christmas Stocking Why stockings? This book will show your kids the fun story behind the tradition.

Who is Coming to Our House? The nativity seen from the animals perspective. Great for the younger crowd.

The Puppy Who Wanted a Boy Heartwarming tale of a sweet puppy that desperately wants a boy for Christmas. If you’re not in the market for a dog, this might not be a wise choice. You’ve been warned.

Itsy Bitsy Christmas: You’re Never Too Little for His Love Came highly recommended by a friend. A reminder that even the littlest person is loved by our Savior.

M Is for Manger Fun book that highlights the Biblical story of Christmas as it goes through the alphabet. Another preschooler favorite!

Annika’s Secret Wish This Swedish tale showcases a young girl’s selfless dreams. The back of the book includes Swedish Christmas traditions you can start with your family.

The Legend of Mistletoe and the Christmas Kittens Written in rhyme, this book gets read at my house all year. Mistletoe the cat looks different than everyone else and feels very alone, until one very special Christmas Eve.

A Christmas Like Helen’s Get a gorgeous peek into what Christmas was like in yesteryear.

Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story This was written by the same author as the Jesus Storybook Bible. Need I say more?

Christmas at Long Pond Go on a Christmas tree hunt and learn about nature at the same time!

The Christmas Promise See how Jesus is the long and expectant King promised long ago! Helps kids see the Bible as one big story, not just random unconnected stories.

Polar Express 30th anniversary edition It’s a classic. It’s beautiful. Read it to your kids.

The Twelve Days of Christmas The popular song is gorgeously illustrated by the renowned Jan Brett.

Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree A sweet and humorous Christmas story that will make your kids’ head spin.
